COMMISSIONED WORK
I currently have very little capacity for commissioned work, but feel free to ask!
DURABILITY AND CARE
Many people are reluctant to buy textile art because they don't have information about the presentation and care.
But this is no more difficult than with other artworks.
There are some basic principles that apply regardless of the medium.
Light Protection
Basically, every work of art should be hung away from direct sunlight!
Felt is an organic material. A slight change in color over the years can therefore not be completely ruled out and is not a reason for return. It does not detract from the work and, on the contrary, emphasizes its naturalness.
However, most dyed fibers are very lightfast - some pictures have been hanging in my home for 10 years now and have not noticeably lost any of their color quality.
Cleaning
As with any work of art, dust can accumulate on the surface of an unprotected felt painting over time, especially if it is heavily textured. It can be easily removed using one of these 3 methods:
- Gently tap it off (this is enough in most cases)
- Use a feather duster
- Use a vacuum cleaner (very rarely necessary). For this method, hold a piece of loosely woven fabric (e.g. gauze) over the surface of the artwork and very gently run a suitable
attachment (without a brush) over the surface of the artwork using the lowest setting of the vacuum cleaner.
It is best to try this on a corner first to see if the vacuum cleaner is not too strong.
Hands off!
By its very nature, felt invites you to touch it - the surface textures are fascinating and attractive. This is perhaps one of the reasons why you have fallen in love with your new artwork and want to present it without glass.
But even the cleanest hands can leave residues of natural oils and over time these will accumulate on the work.
If stains or soiling occur, please contact a specialist dry cleaning service.
Moths
It's happened to most of us at some point - the weather gets cooler, we get our favorite wool sweater out of the closet and realize it's been serving as a meal.
The good news is that pictures aren't stored in the closet, they hang on the wall. Once the problem of UV protection is solved (see light protection above ), the light is a good thing because moths avoid it and therefore won't be a problem.
In addition, Whisperwool products are moth resistant.
If you want to be on the safe side, use a little moth spray from a great distance on unframed pictures from time to time. Each delivery includes a piece of sample felt on which you can test the product first.
HANGING AND PRESENTATION
Felt paintings can be presented in a variety of ways to show off their uniqueness.
Not all options are suitable for every work - some paintings need to be framed behind glass due to
their nature or are already mounted on a stretcher frame - but don't worry! Together we will find the ideal option for your chosen felt
painting.
- Framed: The classic presentation with optimal effect. I will help you choose the right
frame.
When framing behind glass, my first choice is shatterproof Plexiglas®. The picture is shown to its best advantage, is
protected from UV radiation and dust, and nothing can happen during shipping. However, acrylic glass may not be suitable for highly structured
pictures.
- Mounted on a stretcher frame: Minimalist and appealing. The felt texture continues on the
edge, creating a great effect.
- Sewn onto a stretcher frame: The extra personal touch. The
felt painting is sewn onto a larger stretcher frame that I have painted especially for the work.
- On stretcher frame in shadow gap
frame: This option creates a stunning effect that makes the artwork stand out even more.
- Bamboo or wooden stick: A natural and stylish method of hanging the artwork that goes particularly well with the naturalness of the
felt.
- Pure: Suitable works can be sent rolled up like a canvas and you choose how you want to present
them.
